[00:00:01] Welcome to Wednesday One-Shots, the series where we share a bonus story with you to help you get through the week. This time we have a story from a listener named Millie.
[00:00:21] I'm a big fan of the podcast and I'd like to share my scary and weird story with you. It was around the fall of 2018. I was catching up with my friend for hours about life and kids.
[00:00:36] We found ourselves talking about her coming up to Canada so that I could finally meet both her niece and nephew. Seemingly, not long after our conversation, she arrived in Canada. A truly remarkable friend, right? I love her dearly.
[00:00:51] The moment she and her family arrived, we all went out to eat. My family and I showed them around, basically acting as their personal tour guides. We're both Muslim and it was time for prayer so we piled into separate vehicles.
[00:01:07] They were lagging behind us so I called her and told her to go to Mosque A. She must have misheard me and went to Mosque B. I texted her, telling her an address to go to after prayer. The women's section at Mosque A was empty.
[00:01:23] My daughter was weary of new people. Every time someone new walked in, she would break down so I was kind of glad that it was empty. The next thing I knew, an older woman in her 60s came in and began to pray next to me.
[00:01:40] When we were both done, I said hello to her to be kind and she stared at my daughter. Despite my confused thoughts, I got up and carried her away. All of a sudden, the lady exploded and started asking me these religious questions.
[00:01:56] She asked me questions that I had no idea how to answer to get her to stop looking at me sideways for not having answers. I said, I can ask my husband for you. Luckily, he had been calling me nonstop so I answered.
[00:02:10] Then she tried to grab my daughter from me. I turned sideways so that she couldn't touch her. I shouted, excuse me, what are you doing? The lady said to me, shut up, talk to your husband. Honestly, I was dumbfounded, wondering what was going on.
[00:02:28] I yelled back, back up. I can still smell onions and garlic on her breath to this day. That's how close she was to me. She backed my daughter and me into a corner. I held my little girl tightly for dear life.
[00:02:44] As she looked at me, she whispered, look, you're making her cry. Let me take her for the day. Thinking back, she probably had some kind of mental health issue. Sadly, the older people in our community don't believe that mental health issues are a thing.
[00:03:00] I asked my husband where he was. Thankfully, he said that he was in the car. It was good thinking on my part to put our shoes in a plastic bag. After pulling her headscarf down so that it covered her eyes, I pushed her aside and ran away.
[00:03:17] While running down the stairs, she ran after me. Once I reached the door, I turned around to see her staring at me. The man in her company. I ran out the door because the lady and the man weren't too far from us.
[00:03:31] Thank goodness my husband and son were in the car right outside of the door. I don't go to the mosque anymore. Did I report it to the authorities? Well, I wish I did. Lady at the mosque, I hope and pray we never meet you again.
[00:03:48] Thank you Millie for sharing your story. If you have a story to share, send it to letsnotmeetstories at gmail.com. We'll see you next week for a full episode of Let's Not Meet. Everyone stay safe.
